The school counsellor’s role is to support and encourage students, and ensure their academic, personal and interpersonal success. In order to build on what is already being presented to students in the classroom, we offer workshops and host a variety of guest speakers throughout the year. Topics addressed include career planning and education options, responsible internet use, drug and alcohol prevention, anti-bullying and peer pressure, sexuality, tolerance, self-respect and self-awareness. Services available to students and their families include personal counselling, crisis intervention, self-discovery, guidance for parents and families, academic advising, assistance with course selection, career planning and referrals to outside professionals when required.
The learning specialist’s role is to assist WIC students in reaching their academic potential. WIC’s diverse learners are encouraged to better understand their learning profile and develop strategies to maximize their progress. In collaboration with teachers, parents and support staff, students’ different learning needs are addressed and supported.
WIC’s theme of the year is Mental Health. The staff and student body will be working hard to help end the stigma of mental illness. Students share their enthusiasm for this important cause in the following video campaign that was created by Angeliki Argyrakos (a WIC alumna)! #WeInitiateChange
